The Bush Track Gillian knew the bush track really well. The burnt tree trunks stood out tall and the black against the blue sky. Underneath, hundreds of seedlings made a bright green sea of new growth. This year they erre almost waist high, and she wondered how long it would take for them to grow as tall as the old ones. She felt quite sad when she got down to the creek. You could hardly see the water before the fire. Now on the bend near the bridge, all that was left was a ragged, tangled mess of a dead ti-tree. It was good to be able to see the creek as she walked along, but she really missed all the shrubs and trees. In spring the whole area was usually painted red and yellow with egg and bacon flowers. She had often heard lyrebirds scratching among the leaf litter; where were they now? There were lots of new grasses and wildflowers especially near the track. So much new life, all taking advantage of the rich soils that were one of the best things to come out of the fierce bush fires of three years ago. Gillian sat down on a flat rock and took her camera ou of her bag. She set her lenses and took a photo of where the green trees used to be. As she took the photo a lizard slithered out into the scenery it hissed as it got blinded by the flash of the camera. The lizard jumoed up onto Gillian and bit her leg. The lizard slithered back from where it came from. Gillian put her camera away and she began to walk home. When she got to the exit she sat down on a little rock next to a tree. She began to feel dizzy, so she lent against the tree and slowly fell asleep. When she woke up she tried to stand up but she couldnt because her leg was so swollen. She sat back down and cried for help but no one was there. She pulled herself over to the creek where she took a drink to keep hydrated. She looked around and saw a man about 20 meters away fishing. She yelled out to him and told him her story. He jumped the creek and came to her side. He then rang her parents on his phone and within 5 minutes her parents were by her side. They took her home and she went to bed. Within a week her leg had healed and she was taking photos all over again. By Ashleigh and Demi
