Grade 2

TERM 2 2024

We hope the school holidays were filled with fun and everyone’s batteries have been recharged and ready for a fantastic Term 2. Term 1 was jam packed with lots of exciting, educational experiences. Some highlights were our Legoland excursion, Robot Toy Creations, Harmony Week activities, Leadership lessons, Colour Run, African Drumming incursion and Pancake Day.

This term is going to be even busier with Cross Country, Mindful Movement incursion, Education Week, Reconciliation Week, NAIDOC week and VIPs.

This term in Writing we will continue with Writer’s Workshop. Writer’s Workshop helps to develop the students’ writing confidence by allowing choice around the content and style of writing they do. They will be learning about narrative and procedural writing, plus grammar, punctuation and spelling. Students conference with their teachers regularly to set goals and receive individualised teaching and feedback.

A focus for our whole school is improving our student’s spelling. We will continue to build on their whole word spelling inquiry they learnt in term one and extend their spelling strategies using words from their own writing samples.

For Reading, students undertake sustained independent reading daily, plus reading lessons based around CAFÉ strategies. Small reading groups focus on decoding and comprehension strategies.

Our Maths focus in Number this term will be addition and subtraction. We will also be studying fractions, patterns and learning to tell the time.

Challenge Based Learning (CBL)

The whole school BIG IDEA that we are covering this term is ‘Health.’ The Grade 1 and 2 topic is called ‘Happy, Healthy Me.’ We will be learning about the different parts of our bodies and their functions, eating healthy, keeping ourselves happy and active.

In May we will take part in our Mindful Movement relaxation incursion. This program is designed to foster a deep connection between mind and body while enhancing overall well-being.

Home Readers

Please keep listening to your child read every day and recording in their yellow Reader Diaries. It is wonderful seeing the students’ confidence and reading skills grow. Please remember that progress through the reading levels is very individual and that movement through the reader levels slows down as the difficulty increases.

Thank you to all families who are reminding and assisting their children to regularly complete their homework tasks. In Term 2, students are encouraged to read nightly and complete the spelling sheet on their 3 words plus an extra small task each week. Homework is due on Monday and will be sent home every Tuesday.

This term and next term every grade 2 student will be a class V.I.P. for a whole day! It is a special opportunity for the students to make a presentation about themselves and to share some of their favourite things with their friends. They will also be entitled to special privileges around the classroom! Please note there will be no weekly Show and Tell during this term due to the V.I.P. presentations.

You are always welcome to come and talk with us and please feel free to make an appointment if you have any concerns.
