Term 2 was filled with lots of fun learning experiences. Some of the highlights were the excursion to IMAX and the Museum, holding some minibeasts and reptiles in the minibeast incursion, VIP presentations and writing our own minibeast information books. We look forward to another fantastic term in Term 3.
INTEGRATED STUDIES
Our Integrated Studies topic in Term 3 is a history unit called ‘Back to the Future’ where we will be learning about the differences and similarities between students’ daily lives and how they have changed or remained the same over time. We will particularly focus on lifestyle aspects such as schooling, clothes, food, games and transport.
We are planning a few fun incursion and excursions – further details to follow soon!
MATHS
In Term 3 we will begin to learn about multiplication and subtraction strategies and their links to skip counting and addition. We will also learn about location and directional language and graphing.
READING
We will continue to develop the students reading skills through explicit lessons and daily reading practise. Decoding skills and fluency are reviewed and taught regularly, with a strong focus on developing literal and inferential reading comprehension skills.
Grade 2 students read every day in their classrooms – both readers and free choice books. Please encourage your child to read every night at home, and to record this in their yellow reader diary.
WRITING
This term we will be teaching persuasive and poetry writing genres. Students will continue to develop essential writing skills such as idea generation, punctuation, paragraphing and spelling.
PHONICS AND SPELLING
In Term 3 we will be continuing our daily explicit phonics and spelling program – Phonics Plus. We are seeing some excellent results from the structured teaching and learning program. Students are increasing the number of high frequency words they can correctly spell, learning new prefixes and suffixes and are learning new digraph sounds they use when reading and spelling.
SPEAKING AND LISTENING
Now that all classes have finished up their VIP presentations, students are encouraged to participate in weekly ‘Show and Share’. Students will be allocated one day per week when they can bring along something to show the class or tell the class about something special happening in their lives. ‘Show and Share’ helps to develop confidence with public speaking, listening skills and effective questioning. Your student’s teacher will provide the weekly roster via Dojo.
