Grade 2

Welcome to Grade 2!

Well, it has certainly been a busy start to 2026! The children are settling into their new routines, and we are enjoying these early stages of getting to know them all.

Literacy

This term in writing we will be focusing on following the Writers Workshop   approach. Students will be building on the foundations of the program they would have been following last year. They will be working on a variety of writing genres.

In spelling, students will be investigating why spelling is important, what spelling strategies they can use, and will be partaking in daily phonics sessions.

For reading, students will continue to grow in their knowledge of a variety of reading strategies explored through the CAFÉ reading program.

Mathematics

Our maths focus will be counting and sequencing numbers and developing place value knowledge. We will also look at the features of 2D and 3D shapes and the language of location.

Integrated Unit

This term we are doing a Geography unit called ‘My Place in the World’. Students will look at the location of Melbourne within Australia, the states and territories, other capital cities and famous landmarks. We will also have a look at where some of our families have come from and look at places we may have visited on a world map. Students will also explore the links to our First Nations place and country.

Parental Involvement

There are plenty of opportunities for parent involvement across the year. These include excursions, incursions and event days.

Each classroom teacher will communicate with their parents about these opportunities as they arise. Please keep in mind that a current Working with Children Check is required to be summited to the office.

Home Reading

Please try and hear your child read nightly to assist with confidence, fluency and word recognition.

Also remember that every child is an individual and will learn at their own pace. Reading at home should be fun, therefore the books your child brings home will be easier than the ones he or she is reading with their teacher. Don’t forget to record their reading in their yellow reading diary each night too.

You will notice that in Grade 2, the children will not progress through reading levels as quickly as they did in Grade 1. This is due to increasing difficulty in higher level texts. Reader bags must be brought to school every day.

Show and Tell

This Term, our ‘VIP’ program will begin in place of Show and Tell. Each class will have 2 children present each week and you will receive a notice when it is your child’s day. This involves your child making a special presentation about themself and sharing photos and other special items with their classmates.

Regular Show and Tell will commence in Term 2 and a roster will be provided which outlines your child’s day and the topic of each week.

You are always welcome to come and talk with us and please feel free to make an appointment if you have any concerns. We look forward to getting to know your family and your lovely children.

Thank you for your support.
